DAILY ROUTINE

We've  settled into a bit of a routine here in Hoi an.

Breakfast at 8...then relax at the pool for a couple of hours,...then off to the beach as the weather's been really good (no rain).

Lunch at the beach restaurant, then back to our air conditioned room during the hottest part of the day. We have youtube and Netflix on a huge screen.

By around 5pm we head downtown for something to eat,and a bit of a walkaround.

On our way back a final stop at our favourite coffee and smoothie joint, frequented by locals, for a couple of avocado smoothies (R40 for 2)......they're  amazing!

MOTORCYCLES

The population of Vietnam is around 100m.....and the latest motorcycle count in the country something like 75m....apparently the most per capita on the planet.

Kids as young as 12 riding small 50cc bikes and families of up to four on 125's. On my early morning runs,as early as 6h30am,moms can be seen ferrying their toddlers to nursery school upfront (unbelievably  dangerous).

Helmets are a joke,...one might as well be wearing a baseball cap!

But it works,..  and I've  yet to see an accident or collision.

Miraculous really, but it's  really an incredibly efficient way to get around .

The little Honda we hired already had some fuel when we hired it 3 days ago. I rode it till half way through the 2nd day and eventually filled it for the grand total of exactly R50 and probably rode at least 50km.

Then this morning we rode 90km to Danang and back,....and it looks like I still have at least half a tank?

This incredibly efficient and inexpensive form of transport is utilized in virtually every developing country on the planet. In south and central America,....India,.. ..South East Asia,...the Phillipines. I could go on but you get the picture.

So why the @#$% not South Africa . I mean, one can purchase a new 100 or 125cc moped for just R10k or less ..  maintenance costs very little, fuel even less . They're pretty much indestructible.

In the countries mentioned above ,in case of a breakdown, virtually any backyard mechanic can fix them.

In India one could literally replace an engine or gearbox in a locals backyard within hours.

It would provide a viable solution to the unbelievably high cost of transport from our townships where the average worker probably spends 1/3 or more of their salaries on daily transport for themselves and their families!

So why not? Here's  what I think,...the taxi industry wouldn't allow it,....and in fact wouldn't  survive.

What's  the chance of the owners bike being there in the morning? How would South Africans allow the unbelievably efficient flow of traffic which somehow exists in these countries when they literally NEVER allow a car to feed in?

Naah,on second thoughts forget it!

MORE AMAZING FOOD

 This 450ml beer,....R13 @ the restaurant.

We took a ride back to Danang and the Hai van pass.

SON HOI AN RESTAURANT AGAIN

Last night we returned  to SON  and tried the fried egg rice with veg ,and a chicken hotpot.

Pretty good, but a shrimp and papaya salad starter was quite spectacular.

BIKING-HOI AN

We hired a great little 125cc Honda yesterday morning and headed to An Bang beach again

Each section of the beachfront here has a restaurant attached ,situated directly behind it.

I recalled ,from our previous trip, that the approx R65 one pays for the recliners is offset when one orders a meal at the respective associated restaurant.

We paid our 100VND (R65) and relaxed for an hour or two, till a pretty blustery wind picked up and threatened to take an umbrella or two with it.

So we retreated to the restaurant for lunch.

Had a cao lau and a huge plate of vegetable spring rolls. Total cost was 180VND including 2 Saigon beers.

So less the 100VND discount our lunch amounted to just 80VND (R60).

The motorbike has been a gamechanger,....just fire her up and head out into the organised chaos that is Vietnam roads.

Vietnam has the most mopeds per capita than any other country. So it's mainly bikes,...and they come at you from all directions,...but it works! The traffic flows,...very few snarl ups in spite of the congestion.

Families of up to 4 on a 100cc bike,...bikes with 10m trailers loaded to the hilt, construction girders and rebar. You name it!

When crossing the road  as a pedestrian one simply keeps walking  and the traffic flows around you.

Our little 125cc Honda,...is incredibly fuel efficient and more than powerful enough to carry the two of us wherever we desire.

We'll  probably be taking a ride back to Danang 2morrow (30km) to do the famous scenic Huy van pass.

SON HOI AN RESTAURANT

Had our 1st bit of rain last night but we needed to eat so I did a bit of research and discovered this little gem of a restaurant , located around 1km away. We walked, with our recently acquired polka dot macs, and had yet another awesome Vietnamese meal of shrimp spring rolls and Banh Xeo,...a crispy turmeric infused pancake filled with shrimp and grilled pork.

It comes with a pile of square rice paper wrappings.

The idea is to wrap pieces of the "pancake" ,together with the herbs, green papaya and cucumber into a tight "tube" in the rice paper, and then to dip into the fish/peanut sauce as one devours the tube.

All of that, plus 2 ice cold Saigon beers,....R150 😆

LIME VILLA

Checked out early and took a grab taxi (R50) the 7km out to a place we'd  stayed  just  a night,as a gap filler,6 years ago.

It's REALLY located in the rice fields, and no more than 500m from the beach area.

We're waiting by the pool for our room to be sorted and it's like 1000% better than that previous place, and far better than anything else during our extensive previous Vietnam trip, from north to south.

Gonna have to get a m/cycle here (R100/day) but that suits me.

Sure beats watching Cheryl struggle along on her "rec

umbent" !
